Start with a camera inspection
The single best way to control the cost is to know exactly what is wrong. A camera inspection shows whether the pipe is cracked, sagging, root-filled or collapsed, and where. Sometimes the problem is one section, and a targeted repair is all you need. Sometimes the whole line has reached the end of its life.
The main cost factors
Length and depth. A longer or deeper line means more digging or a longer trenchless run. Depth also affects safety requirements for excavation.
Method. Open excavation, pipe bursting and pipe lining each suit different conditions. Trenchless methods need small access pits instead of a full trench, which usually means less restoration.
What is on top. Driveways, walkways, porches, mature trees and finished basements all affect the price, either because they must be removed and restored or because they make access harder.
Where the problem is. A break under the basement floor, under the front lawn or near the property line each call for different work.
Permits and inspection. Sewer work requires a permit and inspection in every municipality we serve.
Restoration. Concrete, asphalt, interlock, sod and interior floors all need to be put back. A good quote lists restoration line by line.
How to compare quotes fairly
Ask every company for the same things: the method, the length of pipe being replaced, the pipe material, permit costs and a restoration list. If one quote is much lower, check whether it leaves out restoration or assumes a shorter section.
